‘Punched Cabaret… takes the seaside heritage of puppetry and mixes it with [Brighton’s] experimental community. A fantastic night out.’
– Animations Online
‘Our host Miranda, the rough-voiced drag puppet “with no strings attached”, pointed out most of these works were brand new – so there would be no refunds. Not that anyone would want one with the rich pickings on offer.’ – The Argus
Think you know puppetry?
Think again.
Punched is our sell-out regular programme of home-grown puppetry talent in Brighton. An evening of puppetry cabaret, for adults, which we curate and produce once or twice a year with our partners Marlborough Theatre (and previously, The Nightingale). The night aims to showcase a wealth of new puppetry performance as well as to introduce exciting new puppetry artists to Brighton’s audiences.
Through Punched, we’ve had the privilege of developing and producing new work by artists including Colossal Crumbs, Inconvenient Spoof, Matthew Robins, Barely Human Puppets, Aya Nakamura, Bear Dog, Grist to the Mill, Mischa Twichin and more, several of which have gone on to be successful full-length shows.
Though Brighton focused, we have also occasionally curated and produced Punched performances in other cities including opening the Suspense Festival, 2015.
If you want to get involved – please drop us a line. We look for short >10minute pieces in any form of puppetry, perhaps something you want to try out, have a deadline to develop or a piece you want to connect to audiences in Brighton and our next performance is likely to be in early 2019.
Punched will be back in 2019 with yet another a night of brand new acts. Showcasing the incredible worlds of Brighton’s puppetry scene, expect visual treats, surprising stories and emotional encounters of the puppet kind, overseen by your host, the drag ex-marionette Miranda – watch this space for details.
